A couple days ago while the laundry was running I noticed a burning rubber smell, sent my son to investigate thinking maybe I was imagining it, he said he didn't smell anything. Later when I emptied the washer I had to wring water out of the clothes and they weren't plastered to the side of the tub like usual. Haven't tried to use it since. My husband took the front off and we found the broken belt:

He thinks something has seized up and just replacing the belt won't fix it. I have since taken the front panel off and looked around and took some pictures, the thing the belt goes on in the center of the machine seems to turn easily, the one towards the front also turns but not quite as easily, and it appears to have a lot of "belt dust" or ash or something under it. We have moved a couple of times, is it possible this could have happened from maybe the belt slipping out of place slightly? Maybe some bad bearings somewhere? Or some bigger part went bad? I'd like to fix it if it's possible (and cheap - this washer is 9 years old). Hubby's trying to talk me into a front loading washer, I want to get all the use out of this one I can. Sorry if the images are huge.
