This Maytag washer squeals in spin cycle and you can smell something burning during the spin cycle (pretty obviously one of the belts). Of course, I suspect something to do with the belt(s). The belts seem very loose. I know that the pump belt is supposed to be loose with no more than 1/4" inch space when pinching the belt. What I am wondering though, is the main drive belt able to stretch so much? The motor has two tension springs, could they need replacing? Or is just a new belt in order? When in the spin cyle, I can physically pull on the motor to tension it, the spin works just fine. Belts, and springs? Or just belt? Any other hints/tips for installation? Much appreciated!

What I am wondering though, is the main drive belt able to stretch so much? The motor has two tension springs, could they need replacing? Or is just a new belt in order? The belt is a cloth belt and will slip to act like a clutch. The motor moves on the track to loosen and tighten the belt. The springs give little problems unless one breaks or rusts....we see more problems with a dirty/rusty track and the rollers causing the motor to not move freely. http://www.applianceaid.com/may-wash-common.html#spin When in the spin cyle, I can physically pull on the motor to tension it, the spin works just fine. Belts, and springs? Or just belt? I would clean the motor pulley with sand cloth, replace the belts and retest the washer before buying/replacing anything else. Also. it appears that there is a spring missing on the motor, that there should be three springs and there is only two so I will get another one. I have recently replaced the tub bearing and had the whole thing apart. Could I have tightened it too much? Is there a technique for tightening that top nut? The motor "rollers" are nylon squares. What should I grease them with? I do have plumbers grease on hand, is that ok? Otherwise they look fine. Everything else looks fine too with no rust or anything. Thanks so much for your help. I owe you a donation and will be back to you about that.

I have recently replaced the tub bearing and had the whole thing apart. Could I have tightened it too much? Is there a technique for tightening that top nut? Tub nut can go as tight as wanted/needed....mounting stem is tightened to where it stops and then 1/4 turn, then the set screw is installed. The motor "rollers" are nylon squares. What should I grease them with? I do have plumbers grease on hand, is that ok? Otherwise they look fine. If they do not need to be taken apart to clean the brackets, a little WD40 will clean and then some turbine style oil to lube....original is a polt-lube ( clear ) grease. jeff.

I sent my wife to the parts house and the guy talked her out of new belts because the old ones look fine (which they do) and sold her new springs and rollers. After installing them, the belt still slipped so I removed the drums and everything and put it all back together and after that it would spin. Now. it has a bad squeak at the belts at the beginning of the spin cycle as the motor bounces back and forth until it gets up to speed. I have tried adjusting the pulley up and down to align the belt evenly between the two pulleys and adjusted the pump belt tension various ways all to no avail. Any hints? Again Thank You!

Did you repair/adjust/oil anything? it has a bad squeak at the belts at the beginning of the spin cycle as the motor bounces back and forth until it gets up to speed. Springs on both side, one one side....how many positions for the springs?...2 or 3? Bouncing motor is often a burnt spot in the belt ( would be noticable ), chunk on the motor pulley, not round belts ( often from sitting un-used between the large and small pulleys ) - o O ) jeff.

No, all I did was remove the motor, replace the springs (2 on one side as they were originally), replace the square nylon "rollers", remove the outer tub, remove the cone and replace without tightening very much, and put it all back together. I was not happy that she did did not get the new belts just to be sure but she didn't know. The belts do look fine but there was quite a bit of squealing and even burn smell going on so I gather that the belts need changing. Try that? Thanks again.

If yes, at least you would have seen if any clothes where caught between the tubs. remove the cone and replace without tightening very much Before replacing anything else, do thta again but when the stem ( cone part ) is removed, put a little oil down inside onto the top of the tub bearing, if dry it can tighten up and prevent the spin from occuring. jeff.
