GE Refridgerator runs warm after defrosting |
Lead | |
|
Am stumped where to look next. Noticed ice buildup in back of freezer, removed panels, 80% of coils were covered with ice, carefully melted it with hairdryer,
but is still acting warm. Thermometer reads 42 degrees on fridge, 25 degrees on freezer after 3 days,,,,,,is cranked up to 9.
Both fans are running, cannot access back, but lower back motor is hot to touch which I think is normal. Dont hear hissing sound like there is
lack of freon. Found diagram where parts are located, so I guess you access them from inside the fridge.
I thought this would be a 2 step process of elimination, but looks like there could be 9 different parts that show the same symptoms. Any ideas
where to look 1st in the process of elimination?
One more note: noticed a few months prior to this a few of the condiment jars were freezing in the back of the fridge (opposite problem). Thanks Bob

Hi,
Noticed ice buildup in back of freezer, removed panels, 80% of coils were covered with iceIce, clear like an ice cube?...or white like snow?...and the other 20% where ??...bare, evenly frosted? Thermometer reads 42 degrees on fridge, 25 degrees on freezer after 3 days,,,,,,is cranked up to 9Time to recheck the frost pattern on the evaporator/cooling coils and let us know what you see... http://www.applianceaid.com/frig_notcold.html Both fans are running, cannot access back, but lower back motor is hot to touch which I think is normal.Compressor is normally warm/hot to the touch when running. Found diagram where parts are located, so I guess you access them from inside the fridge.
False wall come off ( #201 ) to inspect the cooling/evaporator coils. |

More frost now on bottom of coils | ||

Thanks for your reply, attached is picture of inside of freezer, the white frost (ice) came back on the bottome wihtin a couple of days, note on the bottom
by the heater element, The element tested good, located the timer, but is hard to access, am going to check that later. When I cleaned the dust & dirt
accumilation from 10 yrs. on the bottom coils, it was able to chill another 5 degrees colder. Still cranked up to #9, & the lowest temp in freezer gets to
18 degrees.

The ice looks more like the defrost cycle has started but not finsished and the snow starts to melt and then refreezes. The bare coils certainly -look- like a weak system ( compressor, leaker ) which is normally BIG$$ JMO....might be happy shopping time. jeff. |

Jeff,
Thanks a lot for your reply, I suspected as much, wanted a second opinion, today it swung from 35 degrees in the freezer (I'm guessing in the defrost cycle) to 10 degrees a couple of hours later, as a last ditch effort going to test out the timer just for the experience, & start looking whats on sale at Lowes or Menards. Even if it didnt swing so high & low, its still cranked up to 9, & know I will be looking at a huge electric bill. I'm guessing after 10 yrs, they are more energy effecient in the newer models. Thanks again, Robert |
